  • Safety consultants help organizations create safer, more efficient work environments, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations. They identify and manage risks, protecting employers from legal and financial liabilities while keeping employees safe.

In essence, a safety consultant’s dual role is to ensure employee safety and protect employers from trouble. The consultant’s focus is based on the needs of the client's current safety programs and culture. Sometimes that means focusing more on employee concerns, while at others emphasizing risk management and loss control. Regardless of the approach, the goals are aligned: enhancing worker well-being and improving the bottom line.

Safety and business performance are interconnected. By preventing accidents, safety consultants help avoid negative consequences like workers’ compensation claims, employee turnover, reduced productivity, regulatory penalties, lawsuits, bad publicity, and damaged trust with customers.

Safety consultants address current EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) issues and potential future concerns, covering various aspects of employee health and safety.

  • Explore OSHA’s Free Consulting Program

Did you know OSHA offers free safety and health consulting services to small and some medium-sized businesses across the United States? These services are provided at no cost and operate separately from OSHA’s enforcement branch. This means any issues identified by the consultants won't result in penalties, as long as you address them within a specified timeframe. Learn more about OSHA’s On-Site Consultation Program.

For many businesses, OSHA’s consulting program offers a solid foundation for establishing and maintaining a safe workplace. However, it may not fully address all employers’ needs.

  • Typically, our consultants begin by visiting a company’s facility for an initial audit or assessment. During this visit, the consultant identifies hazards and evaluates existing safety and environmental control measures, ensuring compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations. They look for health and safety risks and potential liabilities.

A good safety consultant goes beyond regulatory compliance by identifying inefficiencies and weaknesses that could impact resources and develop into bigger problems over time.

After the inspection, the consultant reviews the findings with the management team, discussing priorities and next steps. These are usually presented in a proposal outlining the consultant’s recommendations.

  • Customization is key when it comes to effective safety programs, as every business has its own unique safety culture and existing protocols. Our approach is tailored to align with your specific needs and the current state of your safety programs.

    1. Assessment and Analysis: We begin by conducting a comprehensive assessment of your existing safety programs and workplace culture. This helps us understand your strengths and identify areas that need improvement.

    2. Tailored Assistance: Depending on your requirements, we offer various levels of support. If you have strong supervision and capable individuals who can implement improvements, we provide the necessary materials and suggestions for them to execute a "fix-it" plan.

    3. Supervisor Development: We recognize the importance of having well-trained supervisors. Our consultants can be on-site to offer train-the-trainer sessions, equipping your supervisors with the knowledge and skills to carry out corrective actions and phased plans for addressing safety concerns and compliance issues.

    4. Customized Safety Programs: Based on our assessment, we help you develop or update your safety programs to ensure they are robust and effective. This may include forming safety committees, updating accident investigation protocols, and/or installing new EHS software.

    5. Regulatory Compliance: We ensure that your safety programs meet all federal and state OSHA and EPA requirements, helping you stay compliant with regulations and avoid penalties.

    6. Ongoing Support: Our commitment doesn't end with the implementation of your safety programs. We provide ongoing support and periodic reviews to ensure that your programs continue to be effective and adapt to any changes in your workplace or industry regulations.

By customizing our approach to fit your unique business needs, we ensure that your safety programs are not only compliant but also contribute to a safer, more efficient, and productive work environment.

  • Safety training frequency can vary depending on the industry, workplace hazards, and regulatory requirements. However, here are some general guidelines:

    1. New Employee Orientation: All new employees should receive safety training during their onboarding process to familiarize them with workplace hazards, safety protocols, and emergency procedures.

    2. Annual Training: Many organizations conduct comprehensive safety training for all employees on an annual basis. This ensures that everyone stays updated on safety policies and procedures.

    3. Periodic Refresher Training: Depending on the nature of the work and specific hazards, periodic refresher training may be required every 3 to 6 months to reinforce safety practices and address any new risks.

    4. When Job Duties Change: Employees should receive additional safety training whenever their job duties change, especially if new hazards are introduced.

    5. After an Incident or Near Miss: If an incident or near miss occurs, it’s important to conduct immediate training to address the cause and prevent future occurrences.

    6. Regulatory Requirements: Some industries and specific job roles have mandated training frequencies set by regulatory bodies like OSHA. Ensure compliance with these requirements.

Ultimately, the goal is to maintain a continuous and proactive safety culture by regularly updating training programs and keeping employees informed about best practices and new safety measures.
